Most houses on this side of the Valley went up between 1979 and 2007, with the median build year landing around 2001. That matters because torsion springs are rated for a set number of open-close cycles, usually somewhere around seven to ten years of normal use before fatigue sets in, and a huge share of the doors out here were installed in the same narrow window. They're all reaching the end of that rating at roughly the same time.
Heat makes it worse. Glendale sits in a severe-heat climate band, and steel doesn't like the swing between a garage that hits well over 120°F in the afternoon and cools overnight. Every expansion and contraction cycle adds a little more stress to a spring that's already near its limit. In a milder climate the same spring might coast another few years. Here, it doesn't.
So when we get a call, it's rarely a one-off. Across the mostly-2000s-built neighborhoods we cover, we're seeing the same failure mode on doors that are the same age, carrying the same spring spec, baked by the same summers. It's not bad luck. It's the housing stock and the climate doing exactly what you'd expect.
